This guitar was absolutely terrible. Not only was it completely scratched up, but only 2 of the buttons work.
No matter what I try, the guitar refuses to recognize when I push the green or orange buttons.If you haven't bought this guitar, I don't recommend it. Since it's designed to come off, the neck has connectors that let the guitar work when the neck is attached to the body of the controller.
My first Guitar Hero guitar was the X-Plorer controller and it was and is a great guitar to use with the Guitar Hero and Rock Band games, but unfortunately it's not wireless. I got Guitar Hero III with the Les Paul on launch day and it worked perfectly.
Don't get me wrong, I love the Les Paul GHIII guitar. I still enjoy the strum bar and fret button designs, but the neck is the flaw that killed it for me.
The strum bar was more quiet than the X-Plorer's, the buttons were easier on the fingers, the conveniences of customizable faceplates and a detachable neck for storage blew my mind, and most importantly, it was a wireless guitar. Fast forward almost three years later and it's not the same sugar coated story.
Over time, this connection gets weaker and eventually makes the controller useless. It'll work great out of the box, but as a product you'll be able to enjoy for years to come, it won't meet your expectations.
I have not had the neck-coming-loose problem as described by some others. Pretty standard control for the GH games. Everything has worked fine thus far. My first GH guitar, so I wanted to go with the classic Les Paul. Looks really cool, other than that though, nothing too special.
The detachable fret board has a chronic and annoying problem. There are six retractable pins on the inside that have to be cleaned before proper function occures with regular (more than once a week) cleanings to make this guitar work. I discovered this AFTER returning two and then looking up online what was up with this guitar.I highly recommend future guitar designs to be a one piece body construction. Don't be cheap, just make it right the first time.
Make sure you know the details of the return or refund policy before you buy. I was lucky that the seller had a very reasonable return policy, and though I had to pay to ship it back, they sent me another guitar that has worked just fine for the last 3 or so months.
The guitar does feel a lot better than the Rock Band guitar (at least to me and all my friends, who started playing Guitar Hero before Rock Band ever came out) and I find the body shape of the Les Paul to be superior to the X-plorer wired controller previously available for the 360. If you are considering buying this guitar, I hope you are reading several reviews first.
I found several websites with potential solutions, and since I don't trust myself to unscrew the guitar parts and modify everything, I tried the simple "clean off the contacts" solution, which only made it slightly better. As far as I can tell, the Rock band controllers are heavier and modeled more after actual guitars rather than controllers shaped like guitars, so the Les Paul doesn't provide the same realism that the RB controllers do.even so, the Les Paul is still a far superior guitar.As others have said, there is one serious flaw with the guitar: the detachable neck can make the guitar stop registering notes.
I bought my first guitar in the Guitar Hero III bundle from a third party seller on a popular auction site, and noticed right away that the red and yellow buttons were having an issue. Though I am extremely happy with the guitar I have now, please consider yourself warned that buying the Les Paul is like playing Russian Roulette, and the odds aren't even that good.
But if you manage to get one that works, you'll be in great shape.
